A CECC approval may not be all that it appears, says David Pearson, technical marketing manager, Anglia Components

Anglia Hi-Rel

Buyers beware when seeking CECC release components, unless you buy from a source qualified to supply those specific CECC release components, you could in fact be taking a risk.

This is because there is a subtle difference between an IECQ-CECC approved distributor and other types of accreditation. Standards such as AS9100, ISO9001 and ISO14001 are awarded to a company, and apply to its business processes.

To gain IECQ-CECC accreditation, a company must be inspected both by an accredited independent 3rd party, for example BSI, to IECQ-CECC and also by the manufacturer of the relevant CECC release components.

The distributor is then accredited to supply those components and they are then added to the companies IECQ-CECC approval document.

If CECC release components are handled by a supply chain partner that doesn’t hold the relevant approval for those components, the integrity of the approval is destroyed and they essentially become commercial parts.

That is the case even if the distributor holds approval to supply CECC release components but does not have the manufacturer and ranges you have specified included on its IECQ-CECC approval document.

The company’s IECQ-CECC certificate shows which components it is qualified to supply, and the relevant information can also be found on the IECQ website (www.iecq.org).

For example, Anglia’s IECQ-CECC certification covers ranges of capacitors from AVX and Syfer. Were we to supply, for example, CECC qualified components from another vendor not shown on our approval document the certification for these components would be invalidated.

Customers should take care to check a supplier’s accreditation carefully.

This applies of course to the grey market and component brokers, but also to companies that are CECC qualified.

Unless the approval document shows the relevant components and manufacturers, you can end up paying a premium for accredited and duly tested devices, but essentially receive just standard commercial parts.
