Reverse mounting surface mount green LEDs reduce space and simplify assembly of low-power backlighting applications

A new reverse-mounting miniature high-brightness surface mount green LED can save board space and simplify assembly of portable devices, automotive displays and other applications where low-power green backlights are required.

Based on GaP technology and operating at a typical wavelength of 570nm, the SML-810MT green LEDs from Rohm Electronics are supplied in a transparent epoxy package with dimensions of just 3.4 x 1.25 x 1.1mm. Typical luminous intensities are as high as 16.0mcd when operating with a forward current (IF) of 20mA.

The reverse mounting feature of the SML-810MT allows the device to emit light on the opposite side of the PCB to which it is mounted. This allows the LED to be placed on the same side of the board as all other components, ensuring that just one solder process is required during assembly.

The new LEDs are rated for typical forward voltages of 2.2V and a maximum forward current of 20mA. Maximum power dissipation is just 55mW and maximum reverse voltage is 4V.

Designed for operation at temperatures ranging from -30 to 85ºC, the new SML-810MT LEDs can be supplied in tape-and-reel format for use with automated placement systems.
