EMC filters meet new Machine Tool Standard EN 50370

Schaffner have introduced a number of new EMC filters to meet the latest product specific standard for Machine Tools, EN 50370. Modern machine tools mostly employ regenerative drives and offer very high levels of efficiency, flexibility and precision.

They employ high performance electronics and very dynamic electro-mechanics, often in very compact spaces. Electromagnetic compatibility is a growing and frequently misunderstood issue.

Machine tool systems have historically not had to comply with a specific EMC standard. Suppliers of the many components required for a complete system have generally considered only the EMC characteristics of their own individual products. This ad-hoc approach is no longer permissible as a new product specific standard, EN 50370 became mandatory in July 2004. From that date the supplier of the complete Machine Tool System has to bear the responsibility of all EMC compliance issues.

Schaffner have carefully evaluated the effect of this new legislation and has developed five new families of filters which when added to their extensive existing filter range will offer machine tool manufacturers a complete EMC solution. The FN3120 series of filters are specifically for regenerative drives. Machine Tool control units can now use the new FN2410 components and a range of compact three phase filters, FN3275 are also available. Two new four wire filters for normal and heightened requirements, FN3256 and FN3280 have also been introduced. These new products complement the existing ranges of line reactors, harmonic and output filters already widely used in the machine tool industry.

Because of the wide-ranging effects of the new EN 50370, Schaffner have made available a selection table that simplifies the filter selection process. By looking up the specified EMC limits, size, power and physical configuration of a machine tool system the correct filters may be simply selected. Schaffner also have the capability to verify the correct selection and confirm the immunity and emission levels for both machine tool developers and end users.

Andrew Kotas, Marketing Manager of Schaffner comments, “The introduction of this product specific standard seems to have largely gone unnoticed by the machine tool industry. We have invested considerably in being able to offer sound advice and complete filter solutions for customers in this market place.”
