New filters developed for power line communication integrity

Schaffner is launching a new design and manufacture capability for specialised decoupling filters for use in domestic and industrial power line communication (PLC) systems.

The launch follows extensive development work in collaboration with a leading Scandinavian electricity company.

This expertise from the world's leading mains filter manufacturer, is now available to PLC system planners, builders of PLC appliances, electricity suppliers and service providers to ensure the provision of safe, reliable and secure transmissions of data and voice over the existing power grid.

Power line communication involves the transmission of data via the mains electricity supply system, for example between two or more sockets (internal) or between a service provider and its customers (external).

Without adequate decoupling filters, PLC systems are vulnerable to interference from neighbouring PLC systems or other electronic devices. Privacy is not guaranteed and - in the case of uncoded systems - incorrect control commands which can be a safety hazard can occur also. The need for filters in PLC applications has been recognised by CENELEC - system requirements are defined in the standard EN 50065.

Schaffner PLC mains filters protect transmitted data from unintentional or deliberate signal corruption or eavesdropping. They prevent the ingress of unwanted signals and interference as well as the transmission of information to the outside. In addition, signal attenuation is reduced, for more reliable communication over greater distances. Schaffner has worked with a leading electricity supply company on a major PLC project, supplying a high number of input filters for the network. One-to-one joint development initiatives with the makers of PLC appliances and transmission modules further enhances the company's ability to provide cost-effective, fit-for-purpose products for today's and tomorrow's market needs.

Today, PLC technology can be used for data transfer rates of 60bits/s to 28kbits/s in the frequency range presently approved in Europe. The technology is already available for data transfer rates of up to 10MB/sec. Approval for higher speed transmission is ongoing in Europe at the moment - it is already in use in some countries.
