Murata High Drain & Extended Temperature Lithium Coin Cells Developed for IoT Devices, samples available from Anglia

Date Published : 24/05/2023 Share with:

Murata have extended their range of Lithium Coin cells to include High Drain and Extended Temperature types to meet the demanding requirements of next generation IoT devices.

Lithium coin cells use is widespread, ranging from the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, medical to factory automation (FA) markets. Traditionally lithium coin cells have been used to provide backup power for low drain devices. However the demand for lithium coin cells to be used as the main power source for devices is drastically increasing driven by the growing IoT market. To support this growing demand Murata developed High Drain and Extended Temperature lithium coin cells by leveraging its heat resistant battery engineering design know-how which has been accumulated over many years of production.

The High Drain lithium coin cells (CR….R series) are ideal for use in applications like tracking devices for logistics and asset management which utilise Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks such as LoRa Technology and SIGFOX, they are also finding wide acceptance in environmental monitoring sensors and Factory automation control systems which are utilising more and more remote sensor technologies as they move to Industry 4.0. The High Drain lithium coin cell range is available in capacities from 200mAh up to 500mAh.

Murata’s High Drain lithium coin cells offer approximately twice the maximum pulse discharge current of a conventional lithium coin cell. Compared to standard cells, the High Drain cell maintains high current even under continuous discharge and can triple the discharge time of the cell *3. The maximum pulse discharge current*1 has been doubled to 50mA compared to that of standard lithium cell, this enables the High Drain model to be used for LPWA communication devices, such as LoRa with high peak currents, etc. this was very difficult to achieve with standard lithium coin cells in the past*2.

Characteristics of High Drain lithium coin cells

*1 Maximum current of pulsed discharge (3 seconds) at 2V or higher discharged with 50% nominal capacity at an ambient temperature of 23°C
*2 Peak current may vary according to the using environment and conditions of use
*3 Compared to standard lithium batteries, enabling longer battery life and less battery replacement requirements

Extended Temperature lithium coin cell

Extended Temperature lithium coin cell

The Extended Temperature lithium coin cells (CR….X series) are designed for automotive devices and outdoor IoT systems such as smart meters and factory and building automation control systems and can also be used as an alternative smaller and thinner solution to conventional lithium cylindrical cells. The Extended Temperature lithium cell range is available in capacities from 220mAh up to 2000mAh.

The Murata range of the Extended Temperature range lithium coin cells operate from -40°C to 85°C compared with standard lithium coin cells which have an operating temperature range of -30°C to +70°C. The extended temperature range lithium cells also exhibit excellent storage characteristics which minimise the voltage drop compared with the standard lithium cells even when stored for 100 days or more at 85°C.

Both the High Drain and Extended Temperature range lithium coin cells from Murata are available in a range of common sizes from 20mm diameter x 3.2mm thickness up to 36mm diameter and 7.7mm thickness (depending on range selected) and can be specified with PCB pins in 2 or 3 pin style allowing direct mounting of the cell to the PCB without a battery holder. The cells are UL approved and meet the RoHS directive.
