The STSPIN32F0B from STMicroelectronics is a System-In-Package (SIP) providing a highly integrated solution suitable for driving three-phase brushless motors using several different driving modes.
The device has an integrated MCU based on the STM32F031C6 with extended temperature range, the MCU performs field oriented control, the 6-step sensor-less and other advanced driving algorithms. Write-protection and read-protection functions are included for the embedded Flash memory to protect against unwanted writing and/or reading. It is possible to download the firmware on-the-field through the serial interface thanks to an embedded bootloader.
The device embeds a triple half-bridge gate driver able to drive power MOSFETs with a current capability of 600 mA (sink and source) and features an integrated interlocking function that protects the high- and low-side switches of the same half-bridge from being simultaneously driven. An internal DC/DC buck converter provides the 3.3 V voltage suitable to supply both the MCU and external components while an internal LDO linear regulator provides the supply voltage for gate drivers. An onboard operational amplifier is available for the signal conditioning, e.g. the current sensing across the shunt resistor, and a comparator with a programmable threshold is also integrated to perform the overcurrent protection.
The STSPIN32F0B has 20 general-purpose I/O ports (GPIO) with the 5 V tolerant capability, one 12-bit analog-to-digital converter with up to 9 channels performing conversions in a single-shot or scan modes, 5 synchronizable general-purpose timers and supports an easy to use debugging serial interface (SWD). Furthermore the device also features overtemperature and undervoltage lockout protections and can be put in standby mode to reduce the power consumption.
Reference Design
STMicroelectronics have released the STEVAL-PTOOL1V1 reference design board to support developers when integrating the STSPIN32F0B into designs. The compact 70 mm x 30 mm reference design board is tailored for low voltage power tools driven by 3-phase brushless motors, supplied by 2S to 6S batteries. The design is based on the STSPIN32F0B controller and STL180N6F7 (or STL220N6F7) power MOSFET. The board is ready for sensorless and sensored FOC, and can be configured for six-step sensorless control through available BEMF sensing circuitry. The accompanying six-step firmware uses position feedback from Hall effect sensors, with debugging and programming capability available through the SWD interface and the direct firmware update feature. The reference board can deliver up to 15 A continuous current, thanks to the optimal thermal dissipation provided by an embedded heatsink. It embeds a fast power-on circuit that connects and disconnects the battery, allowing standby consumption below 1 μA for extended battery duration. Several protection features are included, such as thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, overcurrent protection with programmable threshold and reverse biasing of power stage outputs. The reference design was predominately intended for power tools, but is suitable for any battery-powered application involving similar architecture, rating and performance.
