Hirose introduce the DF61 series of Wire to Board Power Connectors, samples available from Anglia

HIROSE, a world-class manufacturer in connectors, has introduced the DF61 series to meet with the increased requirement for compact, high powered wire to board connectors offering advanced reliability for power supplies and other applications.

The DF61 series has been designed with space saving in mind, the two position for example, only occupies 38mm² approximate board space and the height profile is a mere 2.38 mm. However power performance is not compromised by the small size, an impressive 5A maximum current rating per contact can be achieved using the 2-position connector with AWG22 wire.

High reliability is guaranteed with Hirose’s ’Swing Lock’ structure offering a unique double locking mechanism. During the mating operation the receptacle is inserted into the header at a slight angle by offering the cable end in first, this engages with the positive lock. The mating operation is then finished by ‘swinging’ the other end of the receptacle in to engage with the friction lock which provides a tactile click sensation to confirm correct mating. It also prevents the receptacle from floating. The positive lock can withstand a minimum of 10 N of cable pull force ensuring that the socket cannot be accidentally removed from the header. A small lever makes the un-mating process very quick and easy whilst a long effective contact mating length of 0.4mm ensures good electrical continuity.

Swing Lock Structure

The DF61 connector series consists of surface mount headers, cable sockets and crimp contacts that have the capacity to handle up to 5A (amps) current rating. Furthermore, blade contacts, renowned for their strength are used in the header to prevent damage against any cable wrenching forces. The headers have been designed so the contacts are completely isolated to allow for a long creepage distance that permits a high voltage capability of 350V AC/DC. The termination contacts are fully moulded into the insulator to eliminate any gaps and prevent solder wicking during the production process. In addition the cable socket use crimp contacts which are positioned within a strengthened housing lance to increase the retention of the crimp contact into the housing further improving ruggedness and reliability of the connector system.

The DF61 surface mount headers are moulded from high temperature LCP material and the cable mount crimp sockets are moulded from PBT material, both of which are flame retardant to UL94V-0. Contact materials are brass or copper alloy with a tin plated finish. The connectors have an operating temperature range of -55°C to +105°C.

The DF61 series wire to board power connectors are suitable for use in a wide range of applications including power supplies, robotics, portable medical devices, LED lighting, servo amplifiers, gaming equipment and home appliances.
