The new powerSTEP Integrated Stepper Motor Driver from STMicroelectronics delivers up to 10 A with superior smoothness and accurate positioning. The powerSTEP01 device is a system-in-package integrating 8 N-channel 16 mΩ MOSFETs for stepper applications up to 85 V with a SPI programmable controller, providing fully digital control of the motion through a speed profile generation and positioning calculations.
The powerSTEP01 integrates a dual low RDS(on) full bridge with embedded non-dissipative overcurrent protection and can operate with both voltage mode driving and advanced current control fitting different application needs.
The innovative powerSTEP01 system-in-package device integrates a fully digital programmable microstepping controller (1/128 micro-steps) and 8 N-channel 16 mΩ discrete MOSFETs in dual full bridge configuration all into a tiny 11 x 14 mm2 VQFN package and it is suitable for stepper motor applications requiring up to 85 V and 10 A.
The digital control core can autonomously generate motion profiles with acceleration/deceleration ramps and velocity and position targets; all user programmable through a set of commands and registers accessible via a standard 5-Mbit/s SPI. Support for daisy-chain operations in multimotor applications helps save resources and I/O's on the host microcontroller.
Similarly, analog parameters settings such as current protection trip point, dead-time, slew-rate, PWM frequency - can be performed on-the-fly just by changing the content of the appropriate register. powerSTEP supports both current and voltage control modes to help optimize the design within a wider range of application requirements. The voltage control mode does not require external sense resistors and provides a smoother motion.

The powerSTEP01 device is supported by the EVLPOWERSTEP01 Evaluation board which is a microstepping motor driver delivering up to 10 Ar.m.s. In combination with the STEVAL-PCC009V2 communication board and the evaluation software, the board allows the user to investigate all the features of the powerSTEP01. In particular, the board can be used to check the performance and to regulate the parameters in order to fit the application requirements.
The EVLPOWERSTEP01 also supports the daisy chain configuration making it suitable for the evaluation of the powerSTEP01 in multi motor applications.
