STMicroelectronics introduce MEMS pressure sensor with embedded temperature sensor in a water-resistant package, samples available from Anglia

The LPS27HHTW from STMicroelectronics is an ultra-compact piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor which functions as a digital output barometer, the device also embeds a temperature sensor to monitor ambient temperature levels.

The LPS27HHTW comprises a sensing element and an IC interface which communicates through I²C, MIPI I3CSM or SPI from the sensing element to the application. The sensing element, which detects absolute pressure, consists of a suspended membrane manufactured using a dedicated MEMS process developed by STMicroelectronics.

Device Architecture Block Diagram

The device has an absolute pressure range from 260 to 1260 hPa with an accuracy of 0.5 hPa, temperature measurement accuracy is ±1.5°C and the device features embedded temperature compensation to maintain accuracy and repeatability of the readings. The sensor operates from a supply voltage of 1.7 to 3.6V and features low current consumption down to just 4 µA making the device suitable for use in battery operated portable and wearable devices.

The LPS27HHTW is supplied in a ceramic LGA package with metal lid and is guaranteed to operate over a temperature range extending from -40 °C to +85 °C. The package is has a cavity to allow external pressure to reach the sensing element and a Gel inside the IC protects the electrical components from water whilst the metal cap is grounded electrically for better ESD robustness.

Design support

The LPS27HHTW piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor is supported by STMicroelectronics ready-to-use MEMS motherboard (STEVAL-MKI109V3) development platform lets engineers monitor the behaviour of STMicroelectronics MEMS sensors, this helps designers accelerate time to market and maximize the performance of new product designs. The board is compatible with STMicroelectronics MEMS adapter boards, which fit into the onboard IC socket, and supports I2C and SPI data modes for very high output data rates.
This professional MEMS development tool features a high-performance STM32F401VE microcontroller and flexible power management with software-adjustable power circuitry that allows you to set the sensor supply voltage from 0 to 3.6 V and replicate the operating conditions in the intended application. The board also includes accurate power monitoring on sensor supply voltage and current, so external instruments are not required.

Developers can run a graphical user interface (GUI) like Unico GUI (STSW-MKI109L for Linux, STSW-MKI109M for Mac OSX and STSW-MKI109W for Windows), on a host PC to manage data flow from the MEMS sensors fitted on the Motherboard and analyse MEMS sensor waveforms, which can help explore the operating modes and power settings to optimize sensor performance and accuracy in the application.
