Omron W7ED Touch Sensor enables replacement of Mechanical Switches, samples available from Anglia

Omron has launched a new touch operated sensor which can be used as a drop-in replacement for a traditional mechanical switch, but delivers all of the reliability and flexibility of touch. Capacitive touch sensors deliver a great many benefits in terms of longevity and user-friendliness, but usually require careful work at the design stage and complex set up to ensure that they work reliably in the application. By contrast, mechanical switches are very simple to design in and assemble.

The new Omron W7ED touch sensor combines the simplicity of a mechanical switch with the enhanced performance and flexibility of touch control. The new W7ED sensors have been designed to be suitable for embedding in almost any application where a mechanical switch is currently used, the W7ED is just fastened to the touch electrode with a screw. It reliably detects the capacitance change caused by the presence of a finger without the need to design or incorporate a control PCB or to perform complex sensitivity and calibration adjustments. In addition the W7ED touch sensor provides improved reliability vs. mechanical switches as there are no moving parts to wear out.

The Omron W7ED can be operated from a supply voltage of 5-15V DC and has a maximum output current of 10mA.

W7ED Output Circuit Diagram

The W7ED sensors are available with straight (I-shaped) or right angle (L-shaped) electrodes allowing simple convenient mounting to suit the application requirement. In addition models with an FG terminal are also available to prevent body-to-electrode static electricity transfers. When used in environments where anti-static measures are required, select a model (W7ED-12F or W7ED-12L) with an FG terminal, which acts as a discharge circuit for static electricity.

Electrode Mounting Options

The W7ED sensor from Omron can be used in a wide range of applications including elevators, home automation, domestic appliances, vending machines, washrooms, lighting, industrial equipment and other applications where the control panel is likely to be exposed to fluids or other contaminants.
