Introducing RTS Thermal Fuses from SCHURTER with Integrated Shunt

SCHURTERS RTS thermal fuse is a particularly compact surface mount over temperature protection device for power semiconductors designed to meet the highest demands of modern electronics. RTS stands for Reflowable Thermal Switch, it was developed to protect highly integrated power semiconductors from overheating. SCHURTER have also released a version of the RTS thermal fuse which features an integrated shunt.

The RTS thermal fuse can be soldered on conventional reflow soldering machines with profiles up to 260 °C, this is due to its unique construction where the thermal fuse is mechanically activated after the soldering process preventing the thermal fuse from activating during the heat of the soldering process.

Typical application circuit

The RTS over temperature protection device comes in the same minimal dimensions and maximum breaking capacity whether specified with or without the additional shunt functionality. Housed in a compact 6.6 x 8.8mm footprint the RTS can handle operating currents of up to 130 A and rated voltages of up to 60 VDC and has a tripping temperature of >210°C. The shunt version has an integrated resistance with particularly low temperature dependence. This resistance, known as a shunt, enables precise current measurement and enables an additional – non-thermal – circuit protection or monitoring via an additional control circuit.

The RTS thermal fuse protects power semiconductors from thermal runaway, this refers to the overheating of a power semiconductor such as MOSFET's, IC's, IGBT's, Triac's, SCR's, etc. due to a self-reinforcing, heat-producing process when they are operated at their limits. One reason for this thermal runaway effect is the trend towards increasing power density and miniaturization of electronic circuits. The RTS thermal fuse is designed to protect these high density power semiconductor circuits against thermal runaway. In such an event, the thermal fuse reliably interrupts the circuit at a precisely defined temperature as a fail-safe device.
