Harwin expands the EZ-Shield RFI Shield Can range

Harwin has expanded the EZ-Shield Can range and now offers a wider range of sizes, these RFI shield cans are designed to deliver excellent, cost-effective RFI/EMI screening and feature a unique SMT clip system which makes them suitable for automated assembly processes cutting post-processing time and facilitating easy inspection.

RFI shield cans are used widely in applications where sensitive electronic circuits and IC's need to be fully protected from extraneous electro-magnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI and RFI). Typically the metal shields or 'cans' are mounted directly to the PCB to fully shroud the required circuitry or IC and are traditionally attached to the PCB using through-hole solder tails which require manually soldering after the main assembly process. This process is time-consuming and costly, also, if maintenance is required during setup and servicing access to circuitry and components under the shields becomes inconvenient as the can requires de-soldering. In densely populated PCB areas containing highly sensitive and costly components de-soldering of traditional shield cans for servicing increases the risk of damage.

Harwin's EZ-Shield Can range provides a convenient solution to this problem, the EZ-Shield cans are mounted on the PCB by simply pushing them into specially designed SMT clips which can be fitted to the PCB along with all the other components during the automated soldering process. Harwin's solution of using shield retaining clips, supplied in industry's standard Tape & Reel packaging, provide an automatic placement method which is soldered using standard SMT placement equipment, installation costs are minimised since there is no secondary processing required and assembly takes only seconds.

The EZ-Shield cans are easily removed for inspection/repair/rework, with no fear of damage to the PCB. The SMT clips ensure secure can retention and have high resistance to shock and vibration. The EZ-Shield cans have a mechanically-robust, simple five sided box design which saves cost when compared to fence and cover style cans and are produced from Nickel Silver material to ensure good screening.

The EZ-Shield cans are available in six standard sizes along with a range of compatible SMT shield clips, in addition a shield can kit is available which allows engineers to produce rapid prototypes.

Harwin's EZ-Shield Cans are designed for use in applications including radio systems, wireless equipment, instrumentation and consumer electronics, where low cost, effective shield can retention needs to be combined with good shielding performance.

In addition to the standard size cans the S01-806005KIT Shield Can Kit allows engineers to create a prototype RFI Shield can easily and effectively in minutes, with no special tools or experience required. The low-cost kit comprises two 80mm x 60mm x 0.3mm thick Nickel Silver sheets that are pre-scribed with a 5mm grid. This allows easy cutting and forming, enabling the user to produce a shield can of the required dimensions. The resulting prototype can be used with the SMT clips, included in the kit, to hold the cans securely in place on the PCB.
