Panasonic's surface mount Gold Cap capacitors provide back up

Smaller, more environmentally friendly SMT capacitors from Panasonic are able to replace secondary backup batteries in portable applications.

Panasonic's EM and EN series surface mount capacitors are suited to powering memory and real-time clock backup in small portable devices. The long life, miniature devices are significantly smaller, more environmentally friendly and easier to mount on a PCB than more conventional secondary battery solutions.

Panasonic's Gold Cap double layer capacitors are capable of rapid charge and discharge and, with a diameter of 6.8mm and a maximum board mounting profile of only 1.8mm, are significantly smaller than secondary battery alternatives.

In addition, the capacitors offer between 10 and 100 times the operational life of conventional secondary batteries and are more environmentally friendly as they are free of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium.

Ideal for use in memory cards, they will also prove suitable for many other portable applications requiring backup, such as those found in the telecommunication, data acquisition and photographic industries.

Offered with a capacitance value of 0.2F, the EM devices are rated for a maximum working voltage of 2.5V, while the EN devices are rated for operation at 3.3V. Each series providing a choice of termination style.

Unlike secondary battery alternatives that are typically mounted by hand, the devices are fully compatible with automated placement systems and can withstand reflow solder temperatures.

The EM series features a maximum internal resistance of 100 Ohms and can operate at temperatures of between -25 and 70°C, while the EN series has a maximum internal resistance of 200 Ohms and can operate at temperatures from -10 to 60°C. Both have a maximum operating current of 300uA.
