Microchip adds 12-bit ADC to general-purpose, LCD and USB 8-bit PIC® microcontroller families

Microchip has announced three new high-performance, 8-bit Flash microcontroller families, including USB and LCD peripherals alongside an on-chip, 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) peripheral. The PIC18F8723 high-memory, general-purpose family offers a rich peripheral set and performance of up to 10 MIPS.

The PIC18F8493 LCD microcontroller family offers integrated LCD drive capability for low-power display applications, and the PIC18F4553 family features an integrated full-speed USB transceiver and 12 MIPS performance.

Key Facts:

  • High Performance 12-Bit ADC On Three New PIC18 Microcontroller Families
  • PIC18F8723 Large Memory, General Purpose Family
  • PIC18F8493 Direct LCD Drive Family
  • PIC18F4553 Full-Speed USB Family

These integrated ADC features provide the precision required for high-resolution sensor measurements in applications such as medical, industrial and utility metering. Additionally, these microcontroller families include nanoWatt Technology features, which provide design engineers with multiple options for effectively managing power consumption and extending battery life. To reduce time-to-market, all three microcontroller families are supported by Microchip’s standard, high-performance development systems, including the free MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE) with Visual Device Initializer, the MPLAB C18 C Compiler, and the MPLAB ICD 2 In-Circuit Debugger.

For hardware demonstration and development, the PIC18F8723 general-purpose family is supported by the PICDEM™ HPC Explorer (part number DM183022); the PICDEM LCD 2 Demo Board (part number DM163030) supports the PIC18F8493 LCD family, and the PIC18F4553 family is supported using the PICDEM FS USB Demo Kit (part number DM163025).

The PIC18F8723 large memory, high pincount, general-purpose family (PIC18F8723, PIC18F8628, PIC18F6723, PIC18F6628) is offered in 80- and 64-pin TQFP packages; features 128 or 96 Kbytes of Flash and is available as samples and for volume production now.

The PIC18F8493 LCD family (PIC18F8493, PIC18F8393, PIC18F6493, PIC18F6393) is also offered in 80- and 64-pin TQFP packages; features 16 or 8 Kbytes of Flash and is expected to be fully available during the fourth quarter of 2008.

The PIC18F4553 USB family (PIC18F4553, PIC18F4458, PIC18F2553, PIC18F2458) is offered in 44-pin TQFP and PDIP, and 28-pin SOIC and PDIP packages; features 32 or 24 Kbytes of Flash and is available as samples and for volume production now.
